LEDs and Ice Rinks

Quality lighting is very important for every ice rink. LEDs are the best option regardless of whether you ice skate, like to watch ice hockey or figure skating.

This type of lighting allows for toggling different levels of light intensity depending on the needs of each sport while the wide range of colours adds artistic elements to the ice rink.

Additionally, LEDs offer a light source that is the closest to daylight, which is a great benefit especially for indoor rinks. In ice hockey, for example, good lighting is essential both for players (LEDs eliminate unpleasant reflections and flashes) and live and TV spectators. Such a light source also helps cameramen, who broadcast live, because they can keep track of everything in the game with only minimal altering of camera settings and optimal picture quality.

Furthermore, LEDs save power, which consequently saves costs for sports venues and makes for a more environmentally-friendly lighting option.

But the most important criterion for the quality of a light source is its CRI (colour rendering index). This is what governs whether the light will strain your eyes. V-TAC’s LEDs have a CRI >80, on a scale of 0 to 100. According to the CIE (International Lighting Commission), low values of this index for a light source mean bad rendering of realistic colours while higher values indicate better rendering.
